Southwest’s new Boston routes may open possibilities

Posted on February 19, 2009 at 6:09 pm

The same day we learn that Delta is offering a new route from Nashville to the west, Southwest Airlines announces it will start serving Boston’s Logan Airport, though it won’t say yet where it will fly from there. We have already heard from one hopeful frequent-flyer who wondered whether Nashville might not be a nice central location for one of the eight to 12 flights a day Southwest is initially planning.

An expert chatting with a Boston Globe blogger offers little reason to entertain hopes of a direct flight at this stage. BWI, Chicago Midway and Philadelphia top his list of likely destinations, followed by Orlando and Vegas. Even if we have to connect through Philly, though, the new route may make a cheap weekend outing to Red Sox Nation more feasible.
