And the MCC just became a foregone conclusion.
and so Nashville will go without ANY conventions for three years?? The MCC is far from a done deal.
So we have to build an MCC in SoBro because the current building is just too small. But apparently, you can expand the current structure to 2 million square feet. Please explain to me why we have to spend $585 million on a new convention center in a flat section of SoBro (that can be used for all kinds of projects that would actually help residents here who aren’t interested in service-sector jobs) to replace the current convention center that is being expanded to 2 million square feet at a cost of $250 million.
Just curious if those against MCC is suggesting that Nashville say no to this opprotunity and just build up the current convention center space at a cost of 250 million but without the added benefit of a huge investment by a private company?
In my view this changes things a bit. To say no to this would be saying no to a very large investment into downtown Nashville, lots of new jobs and lots of visitors each year. Which with the additional visitors (100,000+) this would bring in additional revenue needed to fund MCC.
MCC is a large investment for sure and shouldnt be taken lightly. However, Nashville needs to continue to invest in its future if it wants to stay competative.
This is great news. Let’s fire up the bulldozers and get the MCC built as quick as possible! I love that new carpet smell.
It is true that the current convention center will be expanded to 2 million square feet with the addition of 12 floors. Some may think this would be suitable for conventions and would cost less than building the new MCC. However, the 2 million square feet at the current convention center site is not contiguous exhibit space. To attract the large conventions, a facility must have a large amount of contiguous exhibit space, which Gaylord Hotel and Convention Center does not even have in its space inventory. It makes a big difference in the convention industry to have a large amount of free span space all on one level. Build the MCC and promote the new Medical Mart.
The Medical Mart would be a great investment for this private company.
Unfortunately, MCC promoters negotiated a potentially unnecessary site agreement which helps them further their cause.
What’s keeping the Medical mart from locating to SoBro, and allowing the Convention Visitors Beureau & Co to expand thier present facility.
If the MCC was redeveloped more within its own means (say $250 mil, or 1/4th od thier current asking price), with less of a parasitic burden to Nashville, we’d all be better off.
Tax dollars are too hard to come by these days to put all our eggs in one basket. We’re light years behind other cities with rapid transit systems. For HALF the price of the MCC we could have 200 miles of Light Rail and Bus Rapid Transit through Nashville’s major arterials.
Everything seems to get assumed in this town. Correct me but doesn’t Higland Hospitality i.e. Rennaissance get the right of first refusal on any development of the old CC? What review process did this gray behemoth go thru? Poor Old Opry gets shawdowed alive.
