Negotiations between AT&T and the Communications Workers of America looked and sounded like they had reached a dead end earlier this year. They have now produced a proposed three-year contract union members will vote on later this week.

French business mag Journal du Net named Nashville’s iconic AT&T Building — née The BellSouth Tower — as one of the world’s 12 most original office buildings.

The Web site’s description asks if the Earl Swensson Associates-designed building — rendered en Francais as La Bat Tower — is indeed the home of célèbre homme d’affaires Bruce Wayne.

Also on Journals du Net’s douze are innovative buildings in Amsterdam, Mumbai and Shanghai.

Still talking

Representatives of AT&T and the Communications Workers of America don’t have a whole lot to report from the bargaining table in Atlanta. Still, the waters appear to be more calm than they were in the spring.

IT honchos: Rebound starts next spring

An AT&T survey of more than 70 big-company CIOs has them looking at early 2010 as the beginning of the next economic upturn. And when that time comes, they’ll be asked to produce bigger returns on their IT investments in shorter amounts of time.

More than half of U.S. IT executives interviewed stated they are under pressure to deliver a return on investment in half or less than half the time. As a result, two-thirds cited that the change has affected their IT budgets, strategies and priorities.

A step closer to an AT&T strike

The company and the union representing some 100,000 workers can’t find middle ground.

CWA has made it clear to AT&T that it is ready to bargain at any time to resolve the issues and negotiate quality contracts. Unfortunately, AT&T has shown little willingness to move forward and reach settlements. There has been little progress in the areas of health care, retirement security and employment security, among others.

Here’s AT&T’s statement about its Southeast operations.

Ma Bell to bulk up

AT&T plans to add 3,000 jobs this year as it continues to plow billions into its wireless and broadband businesses. Remember, though, that the company still plans to lay off 12,000 people at other divisions.

“Demand for broadband continues to grow as new applications emerge and customers embrace them,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive said in the release. “We expect demand will only escalate when the larger economy rebounds.”

The telecom giant last month said it will add 50 cell sites in Tennessee in ‘09.
