Posted on October 29, 2009 at 10:41 am
Two women from Waller Lansden are finalists in the 2009 edition of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business. Also up for two awards is Marcie Allen of event marketing firm MAC Presents. Here are some details on the work Owen (pictured here at left) and Walker have done.
Carol Owen, finalist in the “Mentor of the Year” category, developed and launched the national organization “Women’s Roundtable” from Waller Lansden’s headquarters in Nashville, after noticing the low female representation in the field of law. This unprecedented nationwide referral and support network for attorneys provides female colleagues with a platform for new business development, referrals, mentorship and a general support system.
Teresa Walker, finalist in the “Best Executive - Service Business - up to 2,500 employees” category, played a pivotal role in helping Waller Lansden remain stable and even grow during the recent economic decline. In 2008, she oversaw the development of a strategic plan that focused on increasing Waller Lansden’s national recognition and raising the profile of its successful healthcare practice. This plan also included a strategy to integrate critical technology that would monitor and improve the firm’s financial management.

Specifically, the Chamber of the Year award recognizes the top chambers in the nation for financial and membership growth and for making a demonstrable impact on key community priorities in areas like economic opportunities, education, transportation, business and cultural vitality.
The Nashville Area Chamber’s overall organizational performance, compared with chambers of a similar size, qualified the organization to apply for the award in the largest chamber category. The Chamber’s leadership role in the Nashville for All of Us community coalition; the development of “A Leading Edge,” a suite of programs designed to help members manage through the economic downturn; and the strength of the Operation Renewal member outreach program were used as case studies in the Chamber’s application because they contributed to the organization’s continued strength in a difficult economy.
Other finalists in the largest chamber category include the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Greater Louisville Inc., from Louisville, Ky. Winners will be announced at an awards show and presentation on Friday, July 31.

Posted on at 6:52 amThe Web site of the Logo Network has named Play Dance Bar on Church Street one of the top gay bars in the country.
“I wanted the places where the booze flows freely, where the crowd is crazily unpredictable, where there’s always the opportunity for anything to happen,” wrote John Polly in the TripOut.com article. “Because when when I think of the “Best Gay Bars,” I think of places where raucous theme nights are the norm, where the locals are crazy and possibly hot, and where fun, unpredictable, bad behavior abounds.”
