At least two dozen workers at the Firestone Polymers plant in Orange, Texas, near the Louisiana state line, will be let go in the coming week. The plant was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike last September.

The Nashville-based tire maker has cut 50 jobs at an Illinois plant where it laid off another 67 earlier this year. In Costa Rica, meanwhile, the company has opened an $8 million factory that will employ 100 and replace a facility in Indianapolis.

Two days after saying it will cut 150 jobs from its La Vergne plant, Bridgestone is laying off seven locals as part of a broader cutback at its Bandag unit.

The automotive industry’s crisis wave has landed in La Vergne, where Bridgestone will lay off almost 10 percent of its work force. The company also leaves the door wide open for more cuts.

“Prior to making any final decisions and in the spirit of cooperation during these challenging economic times, the company stands ready to immediately begin discussions with the USW on what, if any, actions could be taken to continue consumer tire production at that facility. If, after these good faith discussions, the decision is made to cease most or all passenger and light truck tire production at the plant, the elimination of consumer tire manufacturing could occur on or before June 30, 2009. This action could result in the elimination of approximately 500 hourly and salaried jobs.”
