Ellen’s ethical dilemma

Posted on September 11, 2009 at 1:49 pm

So now that everyone on the planet has caught up to our story from yesterday on record labels suing the Ellen DeGeneres Show for violating copyrights, TheImproper.com in New York eloquently raises the point that the TV show host might have a hard time showing up for the American Idol judging she agreed to this week.

In this day of decline record sales and diminishing revenues, there is perhaps no bigger sin in the record industry, and the cavalier way in which the show dismissed the claims almost demands that she be fired from “American Idol.”

The initial request, filed on Feb.26, 2009, sought records of potential securities violations by Stanford Financials Group, its affiliates and its chairman, R. Allen Stanford. The request included the commission’s response to complaints and tips, and any resulting actions.

The SEC charged Stanford last month with running an $8 billion Ponzi scheme.

Two weeks after reports of debt troubles first surfaced, Charter Communications says it will file a reorganization plan by April 1.

“The restructuring was coming one way or another,” Matt Dundon, managing director of distressed analysis at Miller Tabak Roberts Securities, said in a phone interview. “Even with the $8 billion debt reduction figure, the company is still heavily indebted and vulnerable to further restructuring if EBTDA takes a turn for the worse.”

Cable and satellite companies may fail to benefit from digital switch

Posted on January 9, 2009 at 7:38 am

From I, Cringely:

We’ve had more than a decade to prepare for this moment. I did the first-ever PBS HD broadcast back in 1998 and explained then what was going to happen next month. The date was already set. But some people just don’t listen and I think the confusion we’ll see next month among parts of the TV audience will be huge.

Most of us actually have nothing to worry about because those who have satellite or cable TV, which is more than 80 percent of American TV viewers, won’t even notice a difference. That’s because the cable and satellite companies will continue to provide us with the same signals they always have, even though it means converting a digital signal back to analog.

In one sense the coming of DTV is a boon to cable and satellite companies because it may drive new customers to them. BUT IT HASN’T YET. Look at Time-Warner Cable’s recent announcement of flat subscriber growth. If customers were flying to cable because of worries about the DTV transition those TWC numbers would have been up, not flat. And they will go up, but not until the stations pull their plugs next month.
