The recession has Gaylord execs scanning the luxury hotel landscape for properties it could acquire and expand into full-fledged resorts. At an investor conference yesterday, Senior VP of Finance Mark Fioravanti told investors about 50 hotels around the country would fit the bill.

MDHA sues to start convention center land buys

The MDHA has deposited more than $31 million with Circuit Court officials, money it intends to pay a group of downtown landowners whose properties sit in the footprint of the planned Music City Center.

The amounts offered add up to almost $6.9 million more than the cumulative value of the properties as appraised for property taxes at the beginning of 2009. On average, the city is offering a 26 percent premium over tax-appraisal value.

Analyst: Look for Gaylord National to surprise

A little detail from Janney Montgomery Scott’s coverage launch last week of Gaylord Entertainment shares. (Ticker: GET) Analyst Brian McGill sees the stock going to $26 on the back of a focus on booking business now. Also, McGill said, the year-old Gaylord National resort outside D.C. may surpass expectations the rest of this year.

High hopes for Opryland

Just you wait till the economy rebounds and a leaner and meaner Opryland kicks into gear, Gaylord CEO Colin Reed told analysts Tuesday.

We still see a lot of business that wants to book into Opryland. My view is that Opryland will recover into the 70s and our goal for Opryland over the long-term when this economy stabilizes is to have it operating at 80 points of occupancy.

I believe with everything that we have done in Opryland this year, if we can get this hotel back in short order to 75 to 80 points of occupancy it will produce a lot more profitability than it did 12 months ago just because of what we’ve been doing.

Second-quarter numbers at the Briley Parkway complex were lower in part because of $100,000 in severance costs related to layoffs announced in February.

Minority supplier conference coming to town this month

Excavation on the World Product Centre site is scheduled for November, with construction finishing in 2013. WPC will license about one-third of the pavilion space and use the proceeds as collateral on a construction loan. “Marketing and development is–and will continue to be–financed by private equity,” says Michael Resnick, WPC’s executive vice president. “We are confident that we will have the financing in place to obtain a construction loan.”
