Facecard’s consumer challenge

Posted on September 23, 2009 at 9:44 am

An analyst at Javelin Strategy & Research says Ed Braswell and his team at edo Interactive will have to work hard to get a large number of people to migrate to their form of plastic payment.

“If you have to concentrate spending on a credit or debit card, migrating that behavior from existing reward programs — migrating or extricating them from existing bank relationships — is always difficult,” Cundiff told the E-Commerce Times. “Any sort of attempt to engender changes on the part of consumers is always going to be difficult.”

From The Wall Street Journal:

The public perception of credit-card companies has taken a beating in the U.S., where credit-card debt has ballooned, reaching roughly $984.5 billion at the end of last year, according to industry tracker Nilson Report.

That’s partly why Visa and TBWA chose to tread lightly as they created the new campaign. Consumers won’t be seeing a string of Visa ads that promote making expensive purchases with their credit cards.

American Express has offered $300 dollars to select card members who close their accounts:

Card holders have until the end of February to accept the offer and must close their accounts in March or April. Each card holder will receive a $300 pre-paid American Express card.

American Express, often seen as catering to relatively wealthy customers and companies, has been expanding its credit card business in recent years by reaching out to a wider range of clients.

But that strategy has backfired. The company’s earnings tumbled in the fourth quarter as credit losses jumped and debt-burdened consumers slashed spending.

In addition, American Express reported last week that credit card delinquencies rose in January more than analysts expected, as U.S. unemployment increased and the global economy deteriorated.
