Tractor Supply catches its breath

A notable loser in Thursday’s stock exchange action was Tractor Supply, which lost more than 6 percent after Piper Jaffray analyst Mitch Kaiser downgraded the company to ‘underweight.’ Kaiser said the expected deflation is daunting enough to lower his 2010 EPS forecast by 6 percent.

Economist: Hazard’s got it down

An editorial out today from The Economist begins by drawing from a slightly unexpected source.

The article, which debates the prospects and looming dangers of deflation and inflation, invokes many notable names, among them Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman and historian Allan Meltzer. But whom do you ask is the first such thinker mentioned? That’s right, its Nashville’s own Merle Hazard.

MERLE HAZARD, an unusually satirical country and western crooner, has captured monetary confusion better than anyone else. “Inflation or deflation,” he warbles, “tell me if you can: will we become Zimbabwe or will we be Japan?”

Relief on your grocery bill

The Journal’s MarketBeat column reports on the prospect of deflation in consumer goods as supermarkets hold off on ordering new shipments.

Tuesday, Citigroup warned of a “Modern Day Price War” when it cut ratings on Kroger and Safeway. The war would be driven by regional supermarket operators and retailers in general getting aggressive with price cuts to take market share, and possibly by Wal-Mart’s new-found flexibility on price through increased sales of goods with its “private label,” or own brand.

William Blair analyst Jack Murphy says the retailer (Ticker: TSCO) has a chance during the downturn to add to its store base, but that deflation could become a concern.
