GSA gives SSR IDIQ for BIM
Posted on November 25, 2009 at 12:10 pmThe General Services Administration awarded Nashville engineering firm Smith Seckman Reid an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quality contract for building information monitoring.
BIM is an electronic method of generating and managing building data from design through facility management. SSR will provide the service to GSA’s regions tasked with managing new construction projects, overseeing renovations and optimizing performance of existing structures.
The one-year base contract has the option for four one-year renewals and could potentially net $30 million. Says SSR executive VP Steven Lane in a presser:
“The market is moving to expansive adoption of BIM, and SSR has positioned itself to be a leader in that movement. In 2009, we made a decision to produce our design documents using the BIM method of product delivery for all project assignments, unless otherwise directed by the client.”
SSM has used the BIM system on a number of projects in the last year. Locally, those included MTSU’s College of Behavioral Science and 20th and Belcourt in Hillsboro Village.

As they continue to work toward a late-2010 launch of an electricity-powered vehicle, Nissan engineers are getting to grips with the finer points of the system.
The box is expected to cost about $500, says Lance Atkins, senior project engineer-Nissan Technical Center North America in Sacramento.
“How can you make it really simple, a 1-stop shop? One way would be to work with electric companies, have them install (the home-charger) for you (and) roll it into the price of the vehicle,” Dominique says. “(But) maybe you want to pay for it separately. Do you really want to finance your charger for three years?”
