Music biz veterans launch new venture

Longtime artist manager Howard Fields has teamed with music publisher Everett Zinn, who was part of some of George Strait’s early career, and Montana businesswoman Dorris McMurry to launch McMurry Entertainment Group. The trio says they’re close to announcing an artist and distribution partner.

Local wrestling company TNA Entertainment has signed Hulk Hogan to a contract that could produce spin-off television content produced by the same company behind “Scott Baio is 46 and Pregnant.”

“Hulk Hogan is one of the world’s top pop culture icons and the biggest superstar in the history of professional wrestling. We are truly excited to welcome him into the TNA family,” said Dixie Carter, President of TNA Wrestling. “Our goal is to become the world’s biggest professional wrestling company. Hulk defines professional wrestling and we look forward to partnering with him in a variety of ways as we continue to grow TNA globally.”

Blockbuster in survival mode, will close stores

Entertainment retailer Blockbuster says it will close at least a sixth of its U.S. stores — a minimum of 810 — by the end of next year as it looks to get back to profitability. Based on a Nashville-area network of more than a dozen locations, expect at least two to here get the ax.

So now that everyone on the planet has caught up to our story from yesterday on record labels suing the Ellen DeGeneres Show for violating copyrights, TheImproper.com in New York eloquently raises the point that the TV show host might have a hard time showing up for the American Idol judging she agreed to this week.

In this day of decline record sales and diminishing revenues, there is perhaps no bigger sin in the record industry, and the cavalier way in which the show dismissed the claims almost demands that she be fired from “American Idol.”

Birkhead is a former senior VP of marketing at Thomas Nelson and a senior exec at Integrity Publishers, also a former stop of Worthy colleagues Byron Williamson and David Howell.

California marketers open local outpost

Oakland-based Sparkart Group, which specializes in the online marketing of entertainment brands, has brought on Ryan Bitzer to launch and run its Nashville division.

Bitzer will report to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Founder Naveen Jain. He will oversee Sparkart’s Nashville operations and help identify and build key partnerships in the local music marketplace.

“The services Sparkart provides fall into one of the fastest growing areas of the music business today,’’ said Bitzer. “This is where real growth is happening and why I chose to be a part of it. I want to empower artists to move their own products, control their future, and own the direct relationship with their fans.”

As former Chief Strategy Officer at rpm management, Bitzer managed the web presence and marketing of Tim McGraw and Julianne Hough. In addition, he was responsible for company operations, digital strategy, and brand partnerships including Hough’s Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit campaign.

An NPD Group study says the pace of growth in online music sales and the continued crumbling of the CD market will cross path by the end of next year.

When it comes to the unit-sales volume of music sold at retail – including paid digital music downloads and CDs – Apple iTunes leads in the U.S. with 25 percent of music units sold, which is up from 21 percent in 2008 and 14 percent in 2007. Walmart (including Walmart.com) remains in second position with 14 percent of music volume sold. Best Buy ranked third.

Wrestling venture sticks to Spike
