If you’re not in on the Tech Council’s Jan. 20 membership breakfast featuring Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, not to fear. The Nashville Health Care Council is taking advantage of the high-profile visit by scheduling some face time with Ballmer for its own members in the form of a panel discussion on health care IT. Though it will likely be a lunch event, the time and location are still being finalized.

Cellular One has signed a deal to use two services marketed by Madison-based telecommunications software firm Equinox Information Systems. Cellular One runs a switched GSM network across four states.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be visiting Nashville in January to speak at the Nashville Technology Council’s annual membership breakfast. Tech Council President J. Tod Fetherling said Ballmer will talk about development, what’s going on at Microsoft and why Nashville’s tech community is important. The event is slated for Jan. 20.
HealthTeacher went down to Georgia

Community Health Works announced that teachers in Houston and Bibb County will be the first of seven central Georgia school districts to have access to HealthTeacher’s comprehensive K-12 online health education curriculum with the goal of improving the health literacy of children and teens in Central Georgia. The calendar, which will be privately branded to have the look and feel of the Fox 11- Reno website, will enable visitors to find, browse, and interact with the hundreds of thousands of event listings nationwide residing at the eviesays.com website.
The eviesays platform will allow users to export their favorite listings to their personal calendar software, e-mail listings to friends, and get directions from Google Maps to events. Visitors to the site will also be able to submit their own listings via an on-line submissions form to the website.

Tech Council awards finalists named

Seventeen organizations ranging from Emma and EDS to Fisk and Nissan have been named finalists for Technology Organization of the Year, the marquee category in the Nashville Technology Council’s Feel The Beat Awards. The Tech Council will hand out prizes in nine other categories at an Oct. 27 banquet.
Dell to buy IT services firm

The computer maker has signed a deal to acquire Perot Systems for almost $4 billion, a move that will boost its IT services revenue by $2.5 billion annually. Shares of Dell (Ticker: DELL) are off about 4 percent in pre-market trading.
Trevecca launches IT degree

Trevecca Nazarene University this week launched a 17-month bachelor’s program in computer information technology. The course work will be split evenly between the classroom and online and students will meet once a week.
Two local health care players on IT best-of list

Healthways has been ranked 35th on the annual InformationWeek 500 list of top information technology organizations. The only other locally headquartered ranked in the top list’s top half is HCA. First Horizon, the Memphis-based parent of First Tennessee Bank, also ranks in the top 50.
