Promising local software developer Universal Robotics has teamed with Ohio-based Motoman to merge advanced 3D vision systems and industrial robots.

And now for the product description:

The Spatial Vision system is easy to set up. It enables automatic self-calibration with full color and high definition images with millimeter accuracy within a robot’s work envelope at a fraction of the cost of current systems.

The Spatial Vision system can automatically identify any dynamic point in 3D space and calculate the distance to this point using inexpensive web cams. It delivers accurate, full-frame color results at 960 by 720 pixels four to five times per second.

Universal Robotics, which is making waves with smart software targeting the logistics sector, has hired a veteran of Hewlett-Packard and Agilent to lead its marketing efforts.

“Hob brings a rare mix of marketing savvy and technical know-how to Universal,” said David Peters, co-founder and CEO of Universal Robotics. “His experience as both a marketer and engineer, combined with his great passion for technology, makes him the ideal person to successfully take Universal’s products from our lab to the marketplace.”

China Airlines has notified Nashville International Airport (BNA) that it will suspend cargo operations at the airport effective July 31. This suspension, which may be reversed as the economy rebounds, is a result of decreased levels of outbound cargo due to the challenging economic environment. China Airlines has operated at BNA since 2001.

OHL teams with candy company

Brentwood-based third party logistics firm OHL has teamed with candy manufacturer Just Born to help run a newly purchased distribution center in Bethlehem Township, Pa.

By moving its operations to the 600,710 square-foot warehouse, Just Born predicts it will eliminate 500,000 miles a year in trucking trips between vendors and the company’s manufacturing facility in Bethlehem.

OHL has been hired to further consolidate Just Born’s nation shipping program in order to have less of an environmental impact. The new site is expected to go online in late 2009 and will employ 70 workers.

Ingram unit wins Consumer Reports contract

Ingram Publisher Services Inc. (IPS), a full service book distribution company, today announced a new distribution agreement with Consumers Union, nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine and www.ConsumerReports.org.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ingram will distribute book titles published by Consumers Union including the forthcoming Consumer Reports Best Baby Products (10th Edition).

“We are very pleased to have Consumers Union sign on with our team at IPS,” stated Phil Ollila, President of Ingram Publisher Services. “The publications of Consumers Union reach millions – and we’re proud to be able to provide distribution services for their books.”

“In these challenging economic times consumers need trusted information to help them cut through the clutter in the marketplace. This agreement with Ingram will help put Consumer Reports’ unbiased and independent advice and reports into the hands of consumers at a time when they need it most,” said Jerry Steinbrink, vice president, Publishing.

Universal Robotics, which is marketing ’software with an IQ’ for the warehouse sector, has raised $1.3 million from a dozen investors. Developed at NASA and Vanderbilt, the software has the capacity to learn processes as it handles tasks.
