Santa Fe shrinking

The bankrupt restaurant chain Santa Fe Holding has closed at least 10 of its almost 30 roadhouse-style eateries since filing to restructure its finances in July. In Columbus, Miss., things appear to have gone smoothly enough, but in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the process of winding up shop last week included some weapon brandishing that called for law enforcement intervention.

“He started running his mouth at me,” Pate said, “and that’s when I went to my truck and got my shotgun, requesting strongly that he should leave my property.”

Mississippi-based bank holding company Cadence Financial (Ticker: CADE) says it’s beefing up its special-asset staff to handle its large load of sour Middle Tennessee loans. In the banking equivalent of running to the hills, the bank slashed its local real estate portfolio by about $40 million in the second quarter.

Though just two of its almost 40 branches are in the Nashville MSA, Missisissippi-based Cadence Financial (Ticker: CADE) says its Middle Tennessee loan portfolio is primarily responsible for its sorry first-quarter numbers. The company expects a per-share loss of $1.48; analysts had been expecting a loss of just 20 cents.

CCA’s new facility brings out job hopefuls

While CCA officials expect to hire approximately 400 workers to run the prison, more than 1,100 hundred turned up for CCA’s job fair Monday, Warden Vance Laughlin said.

“This has been an unbelievable turnout,” he said. “People are very excited about this.”

At approximately 3 p.m., the crowds had dwindled from the morning rush and those working the fair were preparing for the evening onslaught.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has awarded Corrections Corp. of America the management of more than 2,500 prisoners, a deal that’s likely worth more than $50 million a year. The Nashville-based company (Ticker: CXW) will house the inmates in Natchez, Miss., where it recently wrapped up a $128 million construction project.
