Straight talk from lead Preds owner

David Freeman says that, despite a strong run in booking non-hockey events at the Sommet Center, true success remains a way off for the Predators’ ownership group.
“We’re not anywhere close to victory,” he said. “I would say we’ve cleared the critical stage, but we’ll have a long way to go to feel safe and secure. Until we can find 17,000 people, 41 nights a year that care enough to support us with their pocketbook and their presence, then I don’t think we have been successful with what we set out to do.”

The two sports organizations are focused on cross-selling their sponsors. How long before we see Kleenex on the ice or VUMC on the No. 27?
“Partnering with another locally owned and operated professional sports franchise whose fan base has similar demographics to those of NASCAR allows us to provide current and prospective marketing partners year-round exposure both locally and nationally. In addition, the exposure created locally will help us immensely in our efforts to become a more visible part of the Nashville professional sports landscape.”

Nashville’s hockey team is teaming up with its NASCAR Nationwide Series team to help it sell tickets and give its sponsors some love outside Music City. The two organizations will officially announce the deal on Tuesday.
Locally owned and operated by Mike Curb – of Curb records fame – and Nashville businessman Gary Baker, Baker Curb Racing has positioned itself to be a consistent championship contender on the NASCAR Nationwide series. With an unmatched reputation of delivering results both on and off the track, Baker Curb racing has the distinction of representing some of America’s most trusted brands on a national level. In entering a joint promotional and sales agreement with the Nashville Predators, Baker Curb Racing can now help bring regional exposure to its sponsors. In turn, partnering with Baker Curb Racing gives the Predators a national outlet to help promote local sponsors.

Balsillie still oh-fer
Posted on June 15, 2009 at 10:28 pmCiting a lack of time, Phoenix judge has denied former Predators stalker Jim Balsillie’s bid to buy and relocate the Phoenix Coyotes. But the Research In Motion boss’ team are sticking around.
“We look forward to hearing from the NHL soon on its view of our relocation application and an appropriate relocation fee, so as to allow the court to determine if that fee is reasonable,” Walker said in a news release. “We still think there is enough time for the NHL to approve Mr. Balsillie’s application and move the team to Hamilton by September. The court invited mediation on these issues and Mr. Balsillie is willing to participate in such mediation if the NHL is also willing to do so.”

SEC charges Del Biaggio broker
Posted on March 24, 2009 at 1:55 pmThe feds say Scott Cacchione was key to helping Boots Del Biaggio secure much of the money he needed to buy his stake in Preds.
Using the doctored statements, Del Biaggio was able to obtain $45 million in personal loans from banks and private lenders (part of which he used to purchase an interest in a professional hockey team). According to the SEC, Cacchione furthered the deception by signing documents falsely confirming that Del Biaggio owned the assets in the innocent customers’ accounts.

The Contra Costa Times says Predators part-owner Boots Del Biaggio will plead guilty next week to some of the fraud charges facing him.

The single criminal count carries a maximum 25-year prison sentence, although a lighter sentence is expected as part of the plea deal.
