Straight talk from lead Preds owner

David Freeman says that, despite a strong run in booking non-hockey events at the Sommet Center, true success remains a way off for the Predators’ ownership group.
“We’re not anywhere close to victory,” he said. “I would say we’ve cleared the critical stage, but we’ll have a long way to go to feel safe and secure. Until we can find 17,000 people, 41 nights a year that care enough to support us with their pocketbook and their presence, then I don’t think we have been successful with what we set out to do.”
Lucky No. 12

There’s a weird symmetry here: Days after Harris Interactive said Nashville was the No. 12 city people want to move to, Sporting News says we’re the No. 12 sports town, miles ahead of Baltimore, San Diego, Milwaukee and a lot of others. The list was built primarily from sports teams’ 2008 performances — thank you, Commodores, for making a bowl game — although attendance figured into things, too.
Sounds overwhelmed at job fair
Posted on March 20, 2009 at 9:14 amFrom NewsChannel5.com:
Big crowds showed up at two job fairs Thursday night thanks in part to Tennessee’s unemployment rate, which tops the national average at 9 percent.
Greer Stadium was getting closer to opening day as a record number of potential part-time workers filled the stadium’s restaurant.
The crack of the bat could lead to some extra money in the pockets of people who could really use the paycheck.
“You name it, we pretty much have a bunch of positions here and a lot of folks interested in them,” said Doug Scopel with the Nashville Sounds.
All the job seekers hope to work the 72 home games that the Nashville Sounds will play this season.
The education of David Poile
Posted on December 9, 2008 at 8:46 pmThe Preds’ GM says he learned a lot about providing value at the NHL board of governors meeting, where the consensus is that the salary cap may soon be on its way down.
Another year will pass before that season’s cap number comes into clear focus, but the decisions made by general managers will likely be changing much sooner than that. After two days of extensive discussions about the economy, NHL owners and executives know they need to start watching their spending immediately.
More from the ‘Relocate the Preds’ crowd
Posted on November 29, 2008 at 4:29 pmAn Ontario politician calls a second NHL franchise near Toronto “one of the surest investments right now, I think in the world.”
“Everyone I have talked to, and any economist report, tell us it is a job creator and it’s a profit maker,” said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, who is preparing to petition the Ontario government to push for a second NHL team in the Greater Toronto Area.
