NHC opens South Carolina facility

National HealthCare Corp. has opened a $22.6 million 120-bed skilled nursing and dementia care facility in South Carolina, giving the company 14 locations in the state with more than 2,100 beds.

Earlier this week, the Murfreesboro-based company (Ticker: NHC) told NashvillePost.com it’s planning a $23 million, 150-bed facility in Nashville.

NHC controls expenses, grows Q4 income

National HealthCare Corp. increased its fourth quarter income by 79 percent, to $4.9 million, on tight expense control.

The long term care company had a 4 percent increase in revenues, to $168 million, but its expenses crept up a mere $314,000. Earnings per share in the quarter were 37 cents, compared to 21 cents in Q4 2008.

For the full year, NHC had income of $31.3 million, or $2.31 per share, compared to $27.6 million, or $21.6 per share. Revenues for 2009 were up about 5 percent to $668 million.

The company’s stock (Ticker: NHC) was trading higher Tuesday morning on the news.

Lawrence Tucker, a Brown Brothers Harriman exec whose firm has been selling plenty of National HealthCare Corp. shares lately, last week spent $350,000 to exercise a batch of options that would have expired in May. NHC shares (Ticker: NHC) are about 11 percent above Tucker’s exercise price.

Big NHC investor dips under 5%

Ira Sochet, a former Wall Street exec who has held a big stake in National HealthCare Corp. for more than four years, last month continued to sell many of his shares in the company (Ticker: NHC), crossing through the 5 percent threshold. Sochet had built up his stake in Murfreesboro-based NHC to almosts 10 percent in 2008, but has been a steady seller since the summer.

1818 dumps more NHC

The 1818 Fund, which is run by Brown Brothers Harriman, has sold another 19,900 shares of National HealthCare Corp., which counts a BBH exec among its directors. 1818 now owns about 4.3 percent of NHC shares (Ticker: NHC), which is down from 5.9 percent in the spring.

New York investment house Brown Brothers Harriman continues to trim its stake in National HealthCare Corp., where one of its execs is a board member. The firm last Friday sold more than $400,000 worth of NHC (Ticker: NHC), trimming its ownership in the Murfreesboro company to less than 4.5 percent. Early this year, that number stood at almost 6 percent.

Ho-hum. Another solid quarter from National HealthCare Corp., where third-quarter profits per diluted share of 74 cents handily topped analysts’ expectations. Patient days were flat, pricing was up a bit and operating profits grew almost 12 percent and a 5 percent rise in revenue.

National Healthcare Corp. (Ticker: NHC) has renewed its $75 million line of credit with Bank of America for another year. The Murfreesboro-based operator of long-term care and senior-living facilities said the available money will help it take advantage of growth opportunities in the senior care market.

NHC to train geriatric physical therapists

National HealthCare Corp. (Ticker: NHC) has received accreditation from the American Physical Therapy Association for a clinical residency program to train geriatric clinical specialists. The senior care company said the program will help develop its staff and attract new clinicians.

The 1818 Fund II run by investment house Brown Brothers Harriman continues to be a seller of National HealthCare Corp. shares – even though one of its principals sits on NHC’s board. The fund, which last week said it had sold about 170,000 NHC shares since the spring, on Monday dumped another $240,000 worth of its stake. NHC (Ticker: NHC) has fallen some 27 percent this year versus an 18 percent gain for the S&P 500.

The Murfreesboro-based operator of nursing homes posted second-quarter profits of $9.2 million, up 26 percent from a year ago. Earnings per share came in at 67 cents, eight cents above analysts’ expectations. Pricing gains — especially on Medicare business — drove the gains, as patient days fell slightly.

The acquisition of five Advantage Hospice and Home Care locations gives the Murfreesboro company (Ticker: NHC) an almost statewide coverage area. NHC outlined at its expansion plans in last quarter’s 10-Q.

In 2008, we are continuing to develop an active hospice program in South Carolina independently of our partnership with Caris Healthcare and are also exploring opportunities to expand our home health care services.

Florida-based investor Ira Sochet has sold off a net of some 60,000 NHC shares since mid-October. Sochet – who added to his holdings in May and June – sold into NHC’s recent rally, bringing his stake in the nursing home operator (Ticker: NHC) back down to 8 percent.
