Preds’ value slips four spots
Posted on November 12, 2009 at 7:58 am
The value of the Nashville Predators fell 5 percent last season to $156 million, according to Forbes‘ statisticians. That pushed the franchise back down the league list to the same spot it held in 2006. Check out the team’s current page here and Forbes‘ lists from 2008, 2007 and 2006.
Straight talk from lead Preds owner

David Freeman says that, despite a strong run in booking non-hockey events at the Sommet Center, true success remains a way off for the Predators’ ownership group.
“We’re not anywhere close to victory,” he said. “I would say we’ve cleared the critical stage, but we’ll have a long way to go to feel safe and secure. Until we can find 17,000 people, 41 nights a year that care enough to support us with their pocketbook and their presence, then I don’t think we have been successful with what we set out to do.”

The two sports organizations are focused on cross-selling their sponsors. How long before we see Kleenex on the ice or VUMC on the No. 27?
“Partnering with another locally owned and operated professional sports franchise whose fan base has similar demographics to those of NASCAR allows us to provide current and prospective marketing partners year-round exposure both locally and nationally. In addition, the exposure created locally will help us immensely in our efforts to become a more visible part of the Nashville professional sports landscape.”
Boots’ broker gets five

Preds exec picked for Team USA

Gerry Helper, the NHL team’s VP of communications and development, has been selected to help USA Hockey before and during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next winter.
“Things like the Olympics don’t come around too often,” Helper said. “So I view this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Balsillie still oh-fer
Posted on June 15, 2009 at 10:28 pmCiting a lack of time, Phoenix judge has denied former Predators stalker Jim Balsillie’s bid to buy and relocate the Phoenix Coyotes. But the Research In Motion boss’ team are sticking around.
“We look forward to hearing from the NHL soon on its view of our relocation application and an appropriate relocation fee, so as to allow the court to determine if that fee is reasonable,” Walker said in a news release. “We still think there is enough time for the NHL to approve Mr. Balsillie’s application and move the team to Hamilton by September. The court invited mediation on these issues and Mr. Balsillie is willing to participate in such mediation if the NHL is also willing to do so.”
Preds exec – not Poile – linked to Minnesota job
Posted on April 17, 2009 at 8:26 am
Now that Predators GM David Poile has quickly and adamantly denied any interest in succeeding the Minnesota Wild’s fired Doug Risebrough, another local front-office name has surfaced as a candidate. Assistant GM Paul Fenton is on the list of men said to be interested.
Potential Preds investor surfaces
Posted on February 5, 2009 at 8:50 amA Calgary investment banker who has in the past partnered with Preds frontman David Freeman is interested in acquiring what he says will be a “nominal” stake in Nashville’s hockey team.
“We’re still returning each other’s phone calls but nothing’s finalized,” said Wilson, who is keenly interested in buying into the Predators, given his business connections in the southern U.S. city and affinity for hockey fans there. “We’ll see what happens in a week.”
Report: Preds ordered to produce numbers
Posted on January 28, 2009 at 8:14 amThe Toronto Star updates us on the Boots Del Biaggio bankruptcy case and the “tough” order telling the Preds they need to hand over certain documents.
Sources tell Post Business the court’s order is a lot more ordinary-course-of-business than The Star makes it out to be. A little too much salt on the Toronto ice, perhaps…
The education of David Poile
Posted on December 9, 2008 at 8:46 pmThe Preds’ GM says he learned a lot about providing value at the NHL board of governors meeting, where the consensus is that the salary cap may soon be on its way down.
Another year will pass before that season’s cap number comes into clear focus, but the decisions made by general managers will likely be changing much sooner than that. After two days of extensive discussions about the economy, NHL owners and executives know they need to start watching their spending immediately.
More from the ‘Relocate the Preds’ crowd
Posted on November 29, 2008 at 4:29 pmAn Ontario politician calls a second NHL franchise near Toronto “one of the surest investments right now, I think in the world.”
“Everyone I have talked to, and any economist report, tell us it is a job creator and it’s a profit maker,” said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, who is preparing to petition the Ontario government to push for a second NHL team in the Greater Toronto Area.
