China powers Nissan’s profit recovery

Nissan gets into the battery recycling business
Posted on October 20, 2009 at 10:53 amNissan Motor Co. said it will set up a joint venture with a Japanese trading house for recycling of electric car batteries.
Nissan said Tuesday the joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation is expected to begin operations in late 2010 in Japan and the United States. The companies have yet to finalize details including the capitalization of the venture.
The launch is in line with a potential surge in demand for electric vehicles powered by batteries.
Nissan makes like a fish

Researchers at Nissan have been studying how quickly and how closely individual fish can swim together without bumping into each other. Last week, at a technology show outside Tokyo, the carmaker unveiled a group of little robots that mimic fish, using hi-tech wizardry that could end up in future vehicles.

Lindsay Chappell at Automotive News checks in with word that Nissan will for the first time export U.S.-made engines to Japan for cars that will make their way back stateside. The V-8s being made in Decherd will go into Infiniti models that are apparently in higher-than-expected demand.

Three tidbits from the world of Nissan:
• Cash for clunkers lifted August sales of the Versa, but the truck segment is still wheezing.
• The auto maker is preparing to bring to market more than $1 billion in debt backed by auto loans that will be covered by a Federal Reserve program aimed at making the credit-card, student-loan and auto-loan markets more liquid.
• Cars.com calls the Altima one of the most improved cars of the last decade: “Its accomplishment since 2002 is how it’s provided sportier looks and driving than the big dogs have, without sacrificing livability.”
Investors charged up by Nissan’s e-car

Shares of Nissan jumped more than 6 percent in Tokyo Monday after the company unveiled its first electric car over the weekend.
“Investors are jumping to Nissan after it actually unveiled the much-awaited car,” said Koichi Nishi, an equity strategist at Nikko Cordial Securities Inc. “Products that fulfill the promise of environmental-friendliness are encouraging.”

Nissan surprises with operating profit

Nissan teases its technology
Posted on July 27, 2009 at 11:51 amThe automaker has unveiled its zero-emissions technology, which is so quiet company officials are studying how to add some noise so that other users of the road will know the car’s around.
Nissan’s electric vehicle shows the driving radius within range of the car’s charge on a dashboard navigation map, so drivers won’t get stranded on the highway. It can also calculate if the vehicle is within range of a destination. A handheld remote control allows a user to preset room temperature, set a timer for nighttime battery recharging, and to receive a message when the vehicle is fully recharged.

We may see the electric car that Nissan workers in Smyrna will build as soon as early August, says one industry pub. For now, the vehicle (that’s a prototype at left) looks like it will be a midsized, five-door hatchback.

Speaking to reporters after his company shareholders’ meeting in Tokyo, Carlos Ghosn said Nissan will build electric cars and the batteries that will power them in Tennessee. The initial production capacity of 100,000 suggests the auto maker’s investment could reach $1 billion based on numbers Nikkei first reported a few days ago.

A Japanese paper says Nissan plans to invest at least $500 million into electric-car production lines at its Smyrna plant. The company, which is on track to begin building electric cars in Japan in the fall of 2010, early this year applied for a Department of Energy loan to help it make more energy-efficient cars.

The team at Barclays Capital has upgraded shares of Nissan (Ticker: NSANY) to ‘equal weight’ from ‘underweight’ – despite the fact that the stock has doubled since early March.
GM to offload Saturn to Penske

General Motors Corp. this morning announced a tentative deal for renowned Detroit businessman Roger Penske to acquire GM’s struggling Saturn brand and distribution network.

General Motors says more than a dozen companies have expressed interest in the car brand that was born and raised in Spring Hill. Among them are Penske Automotive — which has been said to partner with Renault-Nissan — and a group led by private-equity player Black Oak Partners.
On the sales front, the world’s auto makers reported their May sales this morning. And while the numbers for several of them were better than expectations, they still made for tough reading.
Ford executives cautioned against reading too much into their better-than-expected results.
“It’s like less awful,” Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of sales and marketing, said in a conference call today. “This is still a very fragile industry. This isn’t any time to rejoice. It’s just a slight uptick.”
