United Way gets tax prep grant
Posted on November 13, 2009 at 11:39 amThe Internal Revenue Service has sent a $120,000 matching grant to the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville as part of its push to have volunteer organizations help people prepare their tax returns.
“United Way and the Tennessee Alliance for Financial Independence are delighted to partner with the IRS to help working families and individuals through free tax prep services and the Earned Income Tax Credit program. This grant will allow us to expand our efforts and reach underserved populations in 34 counties across Tennessee. With approximately $400,000,000 in EITC credits unclaimed in our state last year, we still have a lot of work to do to help these low- and moderate-income working families move closer to financial stability,” said Eric Dewey, President and CEO, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.

Bass attorney to chair new Cancer Society initiative

Mike Sontag, leader of Bass Berry’s tax group, is the first chair of an American Cancer Society group that seeks to increase the nonprofit’s planned giving operations. Sontag’s daughter is a cancer survivor.
When asked to chair the Nationwide Gift Planning Advisory Council, I immediately accepted this new challenge… I expect to challenge myself and the other committee members to develop a national strategy for the Society’s planned giving efforts.
No distressed assets in this Habitat
Posted on at 7:42 amThe Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity says all of its borrowers — who make less than $30,000 per year – were current on their mortgages in September. The organization says a big part of the credit should go to its education programs.
HomeWORKS trainers prepare partner families for homeownership through a series of courses designed to teach new skills and encourage new habits. Delinquency committee members monitor mortgage payments monthly and develop the management processes.
Suggestion: We should spend a little of the remaining stimulus dough to expand HomeWORKS to the first-time homebuyers rushing into the market because of the $8,000 tax credit.
HCA employees do good
Posted on October 19, 2009 at 9:49 pmHCA recently wrapped up its 2009 ‘Caring for the Community’ campaign at headquarters, where a record number of employees contributed to a total of more than $2 million in donations.
It included two “HCA Community Days” on September 15 and September 24, during which 1,639 HCA employees volunteered nearly 10,000 hours of company time, representing an in-kind contribution of about $200,000, to work on 108 projects at agencies throughout Middle Tennessee.

The Campaign for a Healthy and Responsible Tennessee has hired grassroots campaign manager Shelley Courington to be its executive director. She comes to CHART from the American Cancer Society of Middle Tennessee, where she spent five years, most recently serving as the division grassroots director.
Easter Seals Tennessee files for bankruptcy

Easter Seals Tennessee will close a fitness center and forfeit a youth camp under bankruptcy plans after the recession exacerbated its debt from a building program.
The nonprofit group provides job training, recreation and daily help to mentally and physically disabled people.
The Tennessean reported Easter Seals Tennessee plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to eliminate $10 million it owes banks.

PureSafety training Habitat volunteers

Over the past few years, PureSafety has provided its online Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour training to many of the Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity Supervisors on Site (SOS) at no cost. In November 2006, PureSafety provided online training for all volunteers for Whirlpool Building Blocks, a week-long blitz build of 10 homes on one block. PureSafety’s support of the Whirlpool Building Blocks program has continued since the inaugural build in Nashville.
