Another heady buy for Genesco

Posted on November 4, 2009 at 7:40 am

The Nashville-based retailer has acquired Sports Fan-Attic, a chain of 37 stores in seven states, adding another headwear brand to an arsenal it’s been building up since 2004. The companies aren’t disclosing the deal’s price just yet, but if Sports Fan-Attic’s valuation is in line with Genesco’s deals for Hat World and Hat Shack, it was worth about $13 million to Genesco, whose shares (Ticker: GCO) fell almost 2 percent after hours Tuesday.

“We see great long-term potential for growing the Sports Fan-Attic store base, and look forward to bringing Genesco’s collective strength in the mall real estate market and our experience in managing new store growth to that process.”

Straight talk from lead Preds owner

Posted on October 26, 2009 at 9:41 am

David Freeman says that, despite a strong run in booking non-hockey events at the Sommet Center, true success remains a way off for the Predators’ ownership group.

“We’re not anywhere close to victory,” he said. “I would say we’ve cleared the critical stage, but we’ll have a long way to go to feel safe and secure. Until we can find 17,000 people, 41 nights a year that care enough to support us with their pocketbook and their presence, then I don’t think we have been successful with what we set out to do.”

The two sports organizations are focused on cross-selling their sponsors. How long before we see Kleenex on the ice or VUMC on the No. 27?

“Partnering with another locally owned and operated professional sports franchise whose fan base has similar demographics to those of NASCAR allows us to provide current and prospective marketing partners year-round exposure both locally and nationally. In addition, the exposure created locally will help us immensely in our efforts to become a more visible part of the Nashville professional sports landscape.”

Lucky No. 12

Posted on October 9, 2009 at 10:42 am

There’s a weird symmetry here: Days after Harris Interactive said Nashville was the No. 12 city people want to move to, Sporting News says we’re the No. 12 sports town, miles ahead of Baltimore, San Diego, Milwaukee and a lot of others. The list was built primarily from sports teams’ 2008 performances — thank you, Commodores, for making a bowl game — although attendance figured into things, too.
