Symbion’s strategy

The ambulatory surgery center company discussed its plans for improving its sluggish performance on today’s third-quarter conference call, after posting a Q3 loss. A new purchasing agreement should help with cost management, while a heavier focus on physician recruitment and service line development is aimed at growing same-store revenues.

Health care tech co. joining IPO wave

Georgia-based HealtPort, which has a small local presence in former Symbion executive Billy Webb, has filed an S-1 with the Securities & Exchange Commission.

Webb was previously the chief development officer and a director with ambulatory surgery center operator Symbion. He left the company in 2007 to join HealthPort.

Tax provision adds to Symbion losses

The surgery center operator posted fourth-quarter operating profits of $15.8 million – search for quarterly results of operations’ in the link – but a provision for income taxes that was almost as large produced a sixth consecutive quarter of red ink on the bottom line. The total losses in 2008: $20.8 million.

Surgery center operator Symbion files an amended quarterly filing with the SEC saying it discovered an error in its financial nitty gritty. The company also said it wants to pay the interest on some of its debt with more debt:

On November 12, 2008, the Company filed an amendment to the registration statement to, among other things, register an additional $75.4 million aggregate principal amount of Toggle Notes issuable if we elect to make payments of additional interest in kind by increasing the principal amount of the existing notes or issuing additional notes.
