Big utility joins Nissan’s electric car push

In Los Angeles for the U.S. unveiling of his LEAF electric car, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced his company has enlisted Houston-based electric utility Reliant Energy to help flesh out the infrastruture that will be needed to charge electric vehicles.

What that means for its payroll there isn’t clear: The local paper said about 50 people will be let go, but the company announced this morning it will hire at least 35 people.

Sitel cuts another 400 jobs

It will close its Port Arthur, Texas facility at the end of August, shedding 409 jobs. That news comes just days after the company, a unit of Canada’s Onex conglomerate, said it would shutter a 350-job center in Ontario.

Chuy’s popularity may be attributed to its kitschy, offbeat decor, featuring hubcap-lined ceilings and shrines to Elvis. “Our motto has always been, ‘If you’ve seen one Chuy’s … you’ve seen one Chuy’s,’” Hislop says, referring to the layout, which is designed to look as if dining rooms have been added over time.

Among the terms is a clause that lets the company (Ticker: DK) shift assets from one division to another and a Sept. 30 deadline to get the refinery back up and running. The company last month said it was shooting for a May restart.

Delek refinery workers get new union deal
Posted on February 8, 2009 at 9:58 pmThe roughly 180 Steelworkers Union members (out of a total payroll of about 3,800) that work in the refinery division of Brentwood-based Delek (Ticker: DK) are getting a raise and a signing bonus, but it’s not as much as they’d hoped for.
The union, which represents 30,000 employees in the oil industry, said it was not able to negotiate for better health and safety conditions.
“The recession had a dampening effect on our proposal for a more significant wage increase,” Gary Beevers, the union’s vice president and lead negotiator, said in a statement. “Even though the oil companies made record profits the last few years, they used the poor economy as a shield to prevent us from receiving a higher pay increase.”
