Now this would be meaningful health reform

Posted on October 7, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Outlining an idea that would move health insurance “away from spending other people’s money and shifting the burden to others,” Owen management professor Larry Van Horn writes in Modern Healthcare on how the auto insurance model wouldn’t be half bad if applied to health care, if only because it would get us to change our behavior.

What if I purchased auto insurance the way I receive health insurance — priced independently of conduct, with a true premium cost hidden from view that covered all preventive maintenance? I would drive like a bat out of hell. The insurance also would be so costly that I wouldn’t be able to afford it.

Why the music biz needs to embrace subscriptions

Veteran music executive and current Owen professor Tim DuBois imagines a different type of problem for the industry now wrestling with the rise of $1 dollar downloads over $15 CDs.

“If you take $5 times the total number of people who have Internet service, that’s a bigger business than the total music business right now,” DuBois said. “Then all of a sudden you’ve got a bigger number, but how do you divide it up? How do you make sure the songwriter is paid?”

Owen woos the recruiters

Vanderbilt’s MBA program rolls out the red carpet for those in charge of hiring at big companies — while pointing out the green aspect.

“Our goal was to create a website that would answer all of the recruiter’s questions in a well-organized format,” said Joyce Rothenberg, director of Owen’s Career Management Center. “Business recruiters I’ve talked to love that everything they need is just one or two clicks away.”

Creators say the site is also helping Owen to be more environmentally responsible by dramatically cutting the amount of paper the school prints and mails out. And recruiters say it’s much easier to find information online instead of having to store and file printed materials.

Because taking off a day every two weeks makes you expensive and expendable

Acknowledging the jittery job market, Vanderbilt’s Owen School is extending its Executive MBA program by making it weekend-only.

“Our goals in making this change are simple — preserving the selectivity of this highly successful program while bringing flexibility to employers and their key managers who need advanced education for the demands of difficult economic times and beyond,” said Jim Bradford, dean of the Owen Graduate School.

Yanking your money will cost you

So says Owen professor Nick Bollen, who has looked into the numbers behind hedge fund redemptions. Besides, buy and hold will soon make comeback, right?
