State honor for Samuels

The Tennessee Bankers Association has named Avenue Bank CEO Ron Samuels a Leader in Banking Excellence.
Over the course of his more than 40-year career, Samuels has served in a leadership capacity at multiple banks and businesses. Before founding Avenue Bank in 2007, Samuels was group president for Regions Bank in Middle Tennessee. His responsibilities at Regions included the oversight of banking operations in 20 counties and more than $2 billion in assets.Samuels is a founder of the Mid-South School of Banking at Memphis State University and a former board member and chairman of the Tennessee Bankers Association Commercial Lending School. He was honored by the American Institute of Banking’s Memphis chapter as an Honorary Lifetime Board Member and the Nashville chapter as Banking Instructor of the Year. In 1988, he was named the Small Business Financial Services Advocate of the Year for the state of Tennessee.“Not only is Ron a leader in the banking industry, he is a respected leader in the Nashville community,” said TBA president Brad Barrett. “Ron’s commitment to causes that make Nashville a better place is extraordinary.”
D.F. Chase CFO to lead national group

CFO of Nashville-based general contractor D.F. Chase, Inc., Henley was installed to the volunteer position at CFMA’s Annual Conference and Exhibition held recently in Las Vegas. The role is the highest-ranking volunteer position among its 7,000 members within the 28-year-old international professional organization.
Henley’s goals in the coming year include implementing better networking opportunities for the organization’s members. “Now, more than ever, our CFMA connections are the most reliable, credible, and trustworthy connections available,” he said.
Local to lead national public speakers group

After a term as secretary and treasurer, Franklin exec Duane Ward will lead a trade group for speaker’s bureaus in more than a dozen countries.
Duane Ward of Franklin, Tenn. has been elected president of the International Association of Speakers Bureaus (IASB), the association representing 163 speakers bureaus in all corners of the world.
Ward, the president of Franklin’s Premiere Speakers Bureau, said he will focus primarily on providing new and efficient technologies for IASB’s member organizations.“Like all industries effected by shrinking corporate event and travel budget, so, too, have speaker bureaus been impacted,” Ward said. “With new technologies, we can do more with less—and come out of this challenging period stronger and better positioned for the future.”
Ward, an IASB member since 2000, recently served as treasurer of IASB as well as one year in the president-elect position. He will preside at IASB’s annual convention in April 2010 in New York City. A former public relations executive in Washington, D.C., Ward founded Premiere 15 years ago in the Nashville area. The company recently moved their headquarters to their new offices on International Drive in Franklin.
GNAR expansion to honor Wilson

The Greater Nashville Association of Realtors is naming the new education wing of its headquarters on Trousdale Drive after Hal Wilson, who has been teaching various aspects of real estate for more than three decades. The news was announced at GNAR’s March Membership meeting last week, at which Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey was the keynote speaker.
Black chamber has new chair

Amber Gooding, director of Business Diversity Development with the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA), was recently named chair of the Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
Gooding will serve a two-year term as board chair of the Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce, an association of businesses and professionals whose mission is to economically empower the African American community through promotion, education, and the advancement of its businesses and their partners.
Hospice CEO to lead trade group

Janet Jones has been named chair-elect of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and will take over as chair of the group late next year. She’s been a board member since 2004.
