A group of researchers that includes Vanderbilt professor Peter Buerhaus has compared projections of the number of physicians in the work force and concluded that widely used forecasts may be overly optimistic, especially when it comes to older doctors.

The Census Bureau and HUD report that July home sales rose almost 10 percent from June, pushing down the number of remaining homes on the market to 7.5 months. That’s down from more than a year’s worth at the beginning of 2009.

Clarksville growth flatlining

In recent years, Clarksville has made the country’s top-ten list for population gains. But new county census figures show double-digit growth has slowed to a fraction of a percent. Clarksville’s four-county statistical region actually lost population from 2007 to 2008. It’s the only MSA in the state to lose residents last year.

Nashville state’s fastest grower in ‘08

The Census Bureau estimates Nashville’s population grew by 30,000 people from July 2007 to July 2008, easily outpacing Knoxville and Johnson City to rank tops in the state. The MSA’s growth rate was right in line with its average from the first seven years of this decade and more than double that of Louisville and Birmingham. Access the database here.
